Feel free to use a Scandinavian knife outdoors

I will write about the topic of Scandinavian knives, casual outdoor activities using them, and bushcraft.

To the world of custom knives

The other day, on July 8th, I went to the knife show held in Atlanta.

It was a good opportunity to meet the people who are always indebted to me.

And it's a knife show, so we sell and buy knives.

I was looking for a knife with a short blade that I could use daily for a project that was going on in secret while keeping the venue cool.

Mr. Daisuke Kojima, an up-and-coming custom knife maker, helped me.

Custom knives were once purchased as "property" and are still highly valuable as "collections".

However, since the knife for me is a "practical product", I received a suggestion such as "Isn't this okay?" In consideration of the circumstances around it.

Well, I met him for the first time in a long time, but he said, "I'm too thin and dangerous."  ..

No, really.

Now, even if you are asked, "Well, let's climb the mountain?", It might be a little tough.

I've lost that much physical strength ... I've lost about 15 kilograms ... On the contrary, it can be said that I have become completely fat in the past few years in a calm life.

Quiet talk break.

Then, when I saw the booth with Mr. Kojima, I thought, "This is it!" Was Mr. Sadamori Nara's knife.

I put it together with Maglite to make it easier to understand the size.

The real thing feels more compact than you can see in the picture.

The shape of the blade is probably an arrangement of the so-called semi-skinner.

The hairline is put in, and careful making is unique to custom knives. This knife looks like a model published in a magazine.

It seems to be listed here.

It's full of functional beauty that makes you think "this is!" From the appearance.

Nara Sada's knives are custom knives, but they are relatively affordable, and many people use them. Isn't that exactly what I'm looking for?

The curve of the blade, the feeling of size, and the balance have the potential of a knife that can be used without any hesitation.

The steel material is VG-10. It's a bit of a demon's steel material for me, but I bought it because it was so wonderful that I could wipe it out.

Also, this knife and sheath are wonderful.

When you push the knife in, a strong tension is applied on the way. Then, when you push it in further, even though it is leather, it makes a clicking sound and the knife fits in the sheath and is completely held.

Again, with a knife from this site, you can do anything outdoors.

Anyone knows that it can't be used for things like clearing bushes or stabbing domes. However, for other cutting tasks, it's usually enough, and there are many scenes where we use only the lightweight.

On the other hand, it's fun to dare to bring a big knife outdoors.

Even if it's a little difficult to use, or even if it's over-engineered, the knife has that kind of playfulness that you can use what you like as you like.

It's my first custom knife and I'm very impressed.

When I was a kid, I read Knife Magazine and told myself, "Custom knives ... I can't buy such a high price ...", "Hey, you'll be able to buy custom knives soon!" I want to give it.

However, this knife also has some drawbacks or concerns.

That is "blade attachment". Actually, in the initial state, it didn't have a sharp blade.

"Ah, VG-10 ... Is this sharpening?" I was surprised to try the blade, but it's still difficult ...

I think VG-10 is a really difficult steel material. Some of you may be asking, "VG-10? Isn't there anything difficult?" If you are such a person, please tell us the tips on how to sharpen.

I tried using various sharpening supplies such as acanthus, diamond whetstone, black curtain of blade, Spyderco triangle sharp maker, but "sharpness" does not come out. At least it doesn't come out with a convincing sharpness.

On the other hand, MOKI's Banff Long (this is also my favorite knife. Maybe it's for fishing? But it can be used daily) is also the same VG-10, but if you devise this, the sharpness you expected will come out.

If the sharpness is dull, sharpen the edge with a diamond whetstone # 1000.

If you do this, the edges will be rough. So, if you smooth the rough edge with a Translucent oil stone, you will get a convincing blade.

But basically, I'm not good at VG-10.

I can't sharpen it well. Even though it has high hardness, it's hard to do.

A knife is a tool that is sharpened and used repeatedly, so if you can't maintain it yourself, you'll be in trouble.

Something like a Japanese-style sword is relatively easy to cut, even if it looks dirty.

Compared to that, knives are difficult.

For the time being, I want to put it to practical use, so I'm thinking of sending it to the manufacturer once for blade attachment.

Once you have a good blade, there may be room for you to devise yourself. The idea is.

Please look forward to top-secret projects including this knife.

So, today is this strange.
